Trailblazers and Visionaries: Celebrating James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo at Sundance

The Sundance Institute has once again brought the spotlight to independent filmmaking with its annual gala fundraiser, Celebrating Sundance Institute Presented by Google TV. Taking place on January 24, 2025, this event will honor trailblazing artists and creatives who have made a lasting impact on film and culture.

The Honorees

Trailblazer Award: James Mangold

Known for films like Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted, and Ford v. Ferrari, James Mangold will receive the Trailblazer Award for his outstanding contributions to cinema. Mangold's journey with Sundance began in 1994 through its artist programs, marking a career deeply intertwined with the Institute’s mission to support groundbreaking storytelling.

“I am floored and flattered that Sundance thought my body of work was worthy of this honor,” said Mangold.

Visionary Award: Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winning powerhouse, will be celebrated with the Visionary Award. Known for her roles in Harriet and The Color Purple, Erivo has captivated audiences with her dynamic performances on stage and screen.

“Sundance has always been a sanctuary for bold voices and transformative narratives,” Erivo shared. “This recognition inspires me to continue championing bold, diverse stories that connect, challenge, and uplift us all.”

  • Michelle Satter, Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at Sundance Institute, will be recognized for her dedication to nurturing new voices in film.

  • The Vanguard Awards will honor filmmakers Sean Wang (Dìdi), and Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie (Sugarcane).
